What's the Deal with Fiber?

What is Fiber?

Fiber is actually a type of carbohydrate found in fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. Fiber is typically found in most plant foods and does not break down during digestion.

What is the Benefit?

  • fiber contributes to satiety because it does not digest which creates a bulk creating distention and feeling of being full

  • fiber has been shown to be correlated to weight loss because of this satiety benefit leading to less of a caloric intake over time

  • fiber can improve glucose tolerance and lower serum cholesterol due to this delay or inhibition in digestion

  • fiber decreases carcinogen concentration- lowers risk of colon cancer
